Two problems in topology -- a 4-dimensional one regarding knotted surfaces in $\mathbb R^4$, and a two dimensional one about curves on surfaces -- reduce to the same problem in algebra: the Kashiwara-Vergne problem. But what do they have to do with each other? In this talk I will give a short introduction to the three problems, the known relationships between them, as well as the mysterious missing one.
